Vincent Feeney born in Kinvara, Go. Galway moved to Limerick in 1920 aged 2. Educated in St Mary’s Convent, Leamy’s School, CBS Sexton Street and the Municipal Technical Institute, he served an apprenticeship at the National Bakery Company. In 1948, he set up the Abbeycourt Bakery at 19 Nicholas Street. Later, he became owner of the Imperial and Abbeycourt bakeries. Feeney was co-opted to the Limerick Corporation in 1962. In 1964, he proposed a 15mph speed limit in St. Mary’s Park. He became Mayor of Limerick in 1966.
Feeney was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was involved in renovations of the nearby Widows Alms Houses renovations as well as being a member of Treaty Sarsfields senior football team and Captain of Castletroy Golf Club.
In 1972, badly injured when a bread making machine at Abbeycourt Bakery fell on him. He was the grand uncle of John and Edward Grimes better know as Jedward. He died in 1988. The Bakery closed the following year. He warned about the collapse of Hatter’s Castle/Hall’s Buildings (plot of ground on which Treacy’s Bakehouse 22 and Hall’s Apartments are now) months before it happened.
